During this session, we will take a deep dive into the nuanced culture of schools and learn how a CASA can help enhance the life of a student through advocacy. Topics will include:

• Creating meaningful connections to a student’s counselors and teachers

• Collaborating with DCP&P

• The differences between a school’s social/emotional services and community mental health services

• Assisting parents in school navigation

• Learning about the many general education interventions/programs available to all students & demystifying the many acronyms, e.g., Title 1 programs, BSI, IRS, 504 Plan

• Special education services

How and when to assist in referrals to the Child Study Team

• The evaluation process and timeline (including myths sometimes promoted)

• Clarifying the evaluation process to Court parties

• Learning about special education programs

• Reviewing a student’s IEP
